Both the mnemonic phrase and private key are used to access and control a crypto wallet, but they work differently. Understanding the distinction is essential for wallet security and recovery.

What Is a Mnemonic Phrase?

A mnemonic phrase, also called a seed phrase or recovery phrase, is a list of 12 or 24 English words that backs up your whole wallet. FxWallet creates the private key for every account and network in the wallet from it, so one mnemonic phrase restores them all. It is the only way to recover your wallet if you lose your phone or reset FxWallet.

What Is a Private Key?

A private key is a long string of letters and numbers that controls one account's address. On EVM networks, such as Ethereum and BNB Chain, the same private key and address work on every EVM network, so a leaked EVM private key exposes that address's assets on all of them. A private key can't restore the wallet's other accounts, or its addresses on other kinds of networks, such as Bitcoin or Solana.

Your address, which you share to receive crypto, is created from the private key. No one can work out the private key from your address, so your address is safe to share.

Nobody can recover a lost mnemonic phrase or private key, including FxWallet. Anyone who has either one controls the assets it covers, and FxWallet will never ask you for them.
